A few Notables about Endodontist Dr. Jonathan Gutman
What do Mountain Gorillas have in common with root canals? Well for one thing, Dr. Jonathan Gutman is passionate about both of them!
Dr. Jonathan Gutman has been a practicing endodontist since 1978. He discovered his passion for endodontics during his third year of dental school at Boston University. After having his own practice in New York for many years, a move to Tucson gave him the opportunity to work with his friend and fellow B.U. alumnus, Dr. John Hughes.
Dr. Gutman is amazed at the practice his friend has built. He describes Southern Arizona Endodontics as a unique model for endodontic practice in the United States. He says amid the warm family atmosphere there is a strong sense of purpose, where everyone knows and does their job with excellence. It’s a perfect fit for Dr. Gutman, who loves what he does and is passionate about the excellence of his craft.
When asked what the best part of his job is, Dr. Gutman described the joy he feels when he can help patients who have walked into his office in pain, walk out with a smile. Dr. Gutman’s compassion, coupled with his skill as an endodontist, has compelled some of his patients to return just to thank him.
Dr Gutman lights up when he talks about his own family. His wife Renee is a much sought after Pediatric and Adolescent Neuropsychologist. Their son, Benjamin attended Yale Law School and is now the Solicitor General of the State of Oregon. Daughter Rachel attended Yale Medical School and is now an associate with Wellspring Management in New Haven, CT. Dr. Gutman and his wife love spending time with their children, 6 grandchildren, and their wonderful blue Great Dane named Indigo.
Dr. Gutman is very active in his synagogue and enjoys Israeli Folk Dancing, scuba diving, and watching rugby (too old to still play) as favorite activities outside work. And what about those gorillas? Dr. Gutman is passionate about mountain gorillas! In fact, he and Renee were able to travel to Uganda and Rwanda with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Foundation to visit the mountain gorillas in 2010. He describes it as an absolutely amazing experience. Maybe someday he will be able to combine two of his passions and perform root canal therapy on a gorilla!
